Sweden, Stockholm
Northern Europe 2019, day 5: Stockholm
On Thursday morning, the first order of business was to get coffee. We went over to the nearby shopping mall (think Lloyd Center) and I passed by this on the way. It reminded me of some stone animal statues at the mall from my childhood.
Michele: The ones at Hillsdale? I think there are still a few left!
Anna got some breakfast dessert in form of an ice cream flavor called Smurfarna.
Elsine: Smurf blue ice cream…perfect breakfast dessert…
A couple hours later, after we were somewhat caffeinated and sugared, we went back to the mall to get some provisions. Although we’d been in Sweden less than 24 hours, we’d seen pick-a-mix at least 5 or 6 times. I know this because each time we saw it Anna asked me if we could get some!
Elsine: Wow! what a great assortment! Anna looks so happy…
So I guess candy bins are common in Sweden, and I do remember seeing them recently at IKEA. They even have them at convenience stores.
We eventually made it out of suburbia and into the city. We took a train to Gamla Stan, which is the old part of Stockholm. It has the royal palace and some museums as well as many shops aimed at tourists.
Elsine: nice picture of Casey & Anna
I thought this was a beautiful window with a very Scandinavian design aesthetic.
Elsine: Yes very Beautiful…
We went out to dinner at a restaurant serving traditional Swedish food. Anna had meatballs with potatoes and Lingonberries. She said they were just as good as IKEA’s.
Elsine: A true complement coming from Anna…
Casey bracing himself for the check…just kidding! He says it feels a lot cheaper here compared to Iceland. Here it’s just what you would expect in a major city, not Hawaii-like prices.
We took a walk around Gamla Stan after dinner. It was getting dark but there were still a lot of people out (just not in this picture).
The buildings are so beautiful and unique.
This is a row of buildings along the square in front of the Nobel Museum. You can see the cafes with lots of people enjoying the mild weather. It’s been in the low-to-mid 70’s.
Ah! Another lion but this one was outside the palace and it looks much more royal.
