Bali and only Bali, the first time. The second time we got further: boat to Gili Air, long scooter rides with a kid on each parent. Java is still on the list.
The first trip to Indonesia was Ubud and Sanur, the week after a friend’s wedding in Singapore. We spent most of it on a terrace in a guesthouse that cost fifteen dollars a night, reading novels and drinking kopi tubruk, which is not a subtle coffee and was not a subtle week.
The second trip, years later, was more ambitious. A long boat to Gili Air. Learning to ride a scooter with the grace of two people who had never previously ridden a scooter. A kid on the back of each of us, weaving around chickens.
We keep saying we will go back for Java, and for Flores, and for all the other islands we have never been to. The list keeps growing. The trip keeps not happening.
